Organized by Astro and Malaysia Major Events, this event left wrestling die-hard fans abuzz on 10 and 11 October 2014 at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Kuala Lumpur as they witnessed the return of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), with the likes of WWE Superstars such as John Cena, Sheamus, Seth Rollins, The Miz, Big Show, The Wyatt Family, AJ Lee, Paige and so much more.
As early as 5 pm, die-hard fans like-mindedly gathered at the entrance of the stadium to pump up the atmosphere with the famous chants of “Let’s Go Cena, Cena Sucks”, “You Sold Out” and “Awesome”, live-tweeting about their excitement until the #WWEKualaLumpur hashtag had reached the first spot nationwide and the sixth around the world. Die-hards did not disappoint, showing up in wrestling costumes and replica championship belts, while others paid a visit to the souvenir shop filled with various WWE Superstars merchandise. Fans travelled from as far as Indonesia, Japan, Singapore and the Philippines to witness their first ever wrestling event, having missed the opportunity 12 years ago.
As a member of the WWE Universe, I was overwhelmed to meet one of my favorite WWE Superstars, John Cena. When I had first found out WWE was coming to Malaysia, it took too much time and effort to put up the best puppy-dog look to be a part of the said event and catch my favorite WWE Superstar live.
Things were looking grim though, but as I was about to give up and forget about my dreams, my parents surprised me completely with VIP tickets and meet-and-greet passes to meet John Cena on my 21st birthday.
After counting down the days for a month, it was a dream come true to finally meet a WWE Superstar as charismatic and heroic as John Cena. He greeted us with a warm “Hello ladies” and gave a bear-hug to my mother and me. As he let us go, I was stoned for seconds thinking I was living the dream. I never thought he could be so much more charming and handsome than he appears on television.
After over-crowding the entrance of the stadium for almost two hours, die-hard fans settled quickly as the first match began with John Cena taking on The Wyatt Family’s Bray Wyatt. The attendees went wild as Erick Rowan and Luke Harper interfered ringside, ultimately getting banned for their rowdiness. Despite other interferences, including the referee bump and the return of Erick Rowan and Luke Harper from ringside, John Cena stayed true to his heroic maneuvers by hitting the Attitude Adjustment on Bray Wyatt for the win.
As John Cena made his way backstage after the match, I surprised myself by climbing over the barriers to get to him for one last handshake and hug. Despite being shorter than the barrier itself, he never failed to notice my determination to get his attention, and he left me a message saying “Never Give Up”.
The WWE Superstars’ performances and world-class level of production kept the crowd delighted throughout the night as those in attendance proved how passionate with all the aerial moves, taunting, smack-talking that came with healthy sides of chants and laughter. It was an unforgettable night, and it ended far too soon.
